Depression and Phobic Anxiety Disorder

Homoeopathy helped my Depression and Phobic Anxiety Disorder

Back in 1996, I suffered a bad patch of my life due to some sudden deaths of close young associates/ friends because of heart failure with no known history of any heart disease. Soon after the deaths, I started to have anxiety and developed the fear that I might have the same heart problem and started to have panic attacks and it became extremely difficult to continue my daily activities as a normal student.

First, I visited a GP who could not find anything abnormal as all the tests came out normal. Later, I saw Professor Dr. Mubin (Karachi Psychiatrist Hospital), a psychiatrist, and he put me on anti-depressant and anxiolytic drugs. In the first 4 months, the medication made the symptoms worse and I was almost sleeping all the time.

Later I consulted late Professor Dr. Musarrat (May Allah have mercy on his soul), Head of Psychiatry Department, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), who diagnosed my case as Phobic Anxiety Disorder and put me on high doses of TCA drug Clomipramine and anxiolytic drug Alprazolam. The medicines seemed to work as I had few attacks during those first two months of treatment. Dr. Musarrat also referred me to late Professor Dr. Zaki Hassan (May Allah have mercy on his soul), a renowned neuropsychiatrist and former head of the Neuropsychiatry Department of Jinnah Medical Centre/Hospital, Karachi, for his expert opinion. Dr. Zaki recommended an anti-epileptic drug as well along with anti-depressant and anxiolytic drugs.

During these six months, I remained out of the university almost 75% of the time of my final year but after 6 months, I was again on my feet, picking up and competing my engineering studies .

Although the panic attacks stopped after a few months of treatment but the medication I was using brought a lot of side effects including severe headache, constipation, dry mouth, blurred vision, sexual dysfunction, auditory and visual hallucinations and short term memory loss.

After graduation, I joined a company and started to work as a professional engineer. Meanwhile, my treatment under Dr. Musarrat continued. After remaining under treatment and taking these medicines for three years of my practical life, in the year 2000, one day, during one of my visits to Dr. Musarrat’s clinic, I happened to meet a patient there who had been on those drugs for almost a decade and, at times, could not recall even his name!

This startled me. I realized that whatever I was getting was not a cure but just a suppression of symptoms and one day, possibly 6 or 7 years later, I might end up facing a similar situation. During the next 4 years, my life remained monotonous: have the pills, work and sleep.

It could not have gone like that for long. Soon, I started searching the internet for alternatives. The best website to expose these drugs is www.cchr.org . By educating yourself with the facts about psychiatry, you will have the information you need to never become a victim of this pseudo-science.

In early 2004, after remaining on drugs for seven and a half years, I decided to try homoeopathy and placed myself under the care of (Homeopathic) Dr. Ahmad Fakir Muhammad (Aram Bagh Road, Karachi).

I remained under his treatment for about 2 years and there were several ups and downs during the course of treatment. At times, the condition improved significantly. At times, it got worse. Gradually, the psychiatric drugs were tapered off as the condition started to become stable under homoeopathy.

In early 2006, I was completely off those psychiatric drugs which according to the opinions of the leading psychiatrists I had consulted were to be taken for the rest of my life. How wrong those psychiatrists were! Or perhaps they had not heard or read anything about homeopathy or they were biased. Whatever the reason, homeopathy is a boon; the sooner this fact is accepted by the medical community, the better it will be.

According to the Journal of Psychiatric Research, every third person among our population is suffering from some form of mental disorder. My request to such sufferers or their relatives is: Please give homoeopathy a chance and soon you shall see the difference, in shaa Allah. The real cure of mental disorders lies in following the straight path as shown to us by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sal-lallahu alaihe wa’alehi wasallim).
