Homeopathic medicines for kidney stones

In one of my previous write-ups, I gave some cases to show effectiveness of homeopathy in kidney related medical problems.

In the present one, I give below a synopsis of indications of some of the leading homeopathic medicines for kidney stones and the symptoms arising from their presence.

Apis mellifica
Apis mellifica is one of the leading remedies for treating kidney stones (renal calculus) and the symptoms associated with kidney stones. Among its characteristics are – burning and soreness when urinating. With some individuals having kidney stones urination can be frequent and profuse and with others suppressed or scanty. At times, there is frequent desire but passes only a few drops. At times, cannot urinate without a stool. Urine can be bloody, milky, very dark and frothy. There is pain in region of kidneys. Strangury (a drop by drop painful discharge of urine produced by spasmodic muscular contraction). Nephritis and cystitis

Berberis vulgaris
It is one of the anchor-sheets of homeopathy in the treatment of kidney stones and the symptoms arising due to the presence of kidney stones. It is also the most abused medicine for kidney stones.

Berberis has sharp, stitching and shooting pains, originating from kidneys and radiating to different parts and at times all through the body. The pain in some individuals is so severe that it arrests the breathing. There is painful urging to urinate during the colic and also there is a sensation that some urine has remained back. Some individuals experience pain in the thighs and loins on urinating. Like Apis mellifica, Berberis vulgaris also has frequent urination but unlike Apis, there is burning in the urethra when not urinating. While its main action is on the stones in the left kidney, it is also one of the leading homeopathic medicines for stones in the right kidney and, personally, I have found it more useful in its action on the stones in the right kidney than its action on the stones in the left kidney. For the stones in the left kidney, I have more often prescribed China, Colocynthis, Merc sol and Pariera brava than Berberis and results have been quite satisfactory, alhamdolillah.

Cantharis vesicatoria
Burning, cutting and scalding (pains) are the three keywords that sum up Cantharis’ action in kidney stones and accompany almost all complaints arising from the presence or movement of kidney stones. Stones can be in either kidney. There is an intolerable and fearful urging to make urine or dribbling due to presence of stones or inflammation or infection. Cantharis’ range of action is not confined to the presence of stones in the kidneys alone but also covers conditions such as strangury, dysuria, bloody urine, acute nephritis, nephritic colic, cystitis, dropsy, atony of bladder from long retention of urine, etc.

Coccus cacti
It is a medicine of wide-ranging action in treating complaints originating from the presence of stones in kidneys. Its action is more prominent on the right kidney. Lancinating pains travel from kidneys along ureters to the bladder with or without painful urination. There is urging to urinate and urine is deep-colored and thick and contains brick-dust sediment.

Lycopodium clavatum
It acts on the stones in the right kidney. It is also a good medicines for a stone stuck in the right ureter. Urine is bloody. In some cases, there is retention and in some cases frequent urging with profuse urine. In some cases, urine is deep coloured with yellow or reddish sediment. A very severe pain is felt in the back every time before urinating; pain ceases when the urine flows; children often cry out with pain before urinating.

Ocimum canum
It is a remedy of high value in complaints associated with presence of stones, particularly in the right kidney. Renal colic with blood in the urine and violent vomiting call for this remedy. The pain is so severe that patients toss about, wring their hands, moan and cry. If other symptoms agree, presence of nausea and vomiting with pain is a confirmatory indication of this remedy in complaints of kidney stones.

Pareira brava
Its action is on the complaints associated with the presence of stones in the left kidney. Violent pain resulting from the left renal stones radiating from left kidney to groin, following course of left ureter, constant urging to urinate; violent pain in the glans penis and down the thighs during efforts of urination, at times, shooting down into toes and soles of feet. The patient is unable to urinate while standing, must get on knees and hands, pressing head firmly to the floor to urinate.

Sarsaparilla officinalis
It is among the remedies that are often prescribed for the treatment of the complaints arising as a result of stones in the right kidney. Urine is painful and can only be passed when standing (notice, this is quite opposite the Pareira brava where the patient cannot pass urine while standing and has to get on knees and hands to be able to pass the urine; besides, Pareira affects left kidney and Sarsaparilla right kidney). It is specially indicated in infants whose diapers show sand and in children who scream before and while passing urine.

In addition to the above, I have found China officinalis, Colocynthis, Mercurius solubilis, Acidum Benzoic and Nux vomica of frequent service in treating complaints resulting from stones in the renal system.
